[Title] Toward The Best Research Institute for Natural Products


KIST Gangneung Institute of Natural Products, established in Gangneung, Gangwon province in 2003, leads innovations and demonstrates the highest level of technology transfer performance in Korea. With highly accumulated research capabilities and technical knowledge in the field of natural products, we strive to contribute to regional and national development.


Specifically, by building an AI-based platform for the development of natural food and pharmaceuticals

And developing material from wild plant native to Gangwon province to fight retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration

And propose a solution to obesity for people of northern Canada

We are one step closer to realize a vision of ‘Bringing happiness with natural products’.


In addition, with efforts to revitalize the local economy by starting businesses through investment in technology,

The Institute of Natural Products, by acting as a tow truck, has developed not only Gangwon province, but also the entire natural food industry in Korea.

The Institute of Natural Products is leading the industrialization of natural products, based on scientific evidence, the discovery of potential natural materials and the identification of clear mechanisms for interpretation of efficiency,

Natural Products Research Center

- Discovery of functional natural materials, verification of efficacy, and identification of mechanisms of action

- Research into the discovery and control of new biomarkers / targets for aging and chronic diseases

- Natural product conversion technology for optimization and maximization of active ingredients


using natural products with complex ingredients for the development of models of efficacy prediction with big data and artificial intelligence to research new drug development techniques.

Natural Products Informatics Research Center

- Natural products library (Korea native plants base bank) and structural information of natural compounds

- Bioinformatics-based bioactive natural products screening and drug target prediction

- Creation, analysis and utilization of natural products through multiomics information


Additionally, the Smart Farm Research Center is conducting research for future agriculture with the goal of establishing a K-Smart Farm platform, leading to smart farm crops and the modeling and utilization of plant growth based on big data and artificial intelligence.
